Spatial Studies Series (1953/54 and 57/58)
The series Spatial Studies was–much like the Light Forms–drawn into space by the movement of elastically deformed white-painted wires–in analogy to the construction of ruled surfaces from generating straight lines. Here, too, the illumination was provided by the projection of a grid of lines. In the process, the deformed and suspended wire was set in motion. The phase images created during the movement process added up to a complete virtual spatial object when the aperture was opened. Both rotationally symmetrical and translationally built geometric structures were examined.
Already in the years 1953/54 and then later again in 1957/58 Franke colorized some motifs. This involved using projectors with color film for illumination, with which some of the black-and-white motifs were re-exposed.
