Series Green (1973)
A system designed for the evaluation of medical X-ray images, which was still in the experimental stage at the time, served as the graphic system. However, it was used in a different way than originally intended. The images used were not X-ray images, but punched cards whose structures were input as image templates. On a small display monitor (approx. 15 x 15 cm), the respective image could be changed in real time, under observation, using techniques of image processing, for example adjusting the contrast and brightness. Franke documented the resulting images by photographing them directly from the display monitor. The same system was also used to create printed graphics, the motifs of the Farbraster series, which were produced using one of the world’s first inkspray plotters.
