Franke & Friends Collection

Physical Works

Over the course of his life, Herbert W. Franke curated numerous exhibitions and also wrote a number of books and articles on generative art. He always wanted to inform the public with a broad spectrum of artists and their works that this art form has been a worldwide trend since the 1950s – from constructive and concrete art to Opt Art and generative photography to computer art, which now has evolved into crypto art and AI art.

The majority of Franke’s historical collection from the field of computer art was transferred to the Kunsthalle Bremen in 2007. However, some works remained in the private collection of Franke and his wife Susanne Paech. These works are to be catalogued by the foundation in 2024 and added to the foundation’s Franke & Friends Collection. It follows Franke’s often-published concept of “generative visual art”. It did not matter to Franke whether such works were classified as Op Art, generative photography or computer art.  The artists who belonged to this genre created their works on the basis of rational considerations and algorithmic methods, usually also using technical aids and often based on various research studies. Franke built up a global network with these artists from the 1950s onwards and remained in contact with them throughout his life. He himself always referred to these companions as “my friends”, artists who followed a similar artistic concept of rational art observation and design to his own. As part of the tribute project in 2022, the foundation received donations of physical works from some of these pioneers of generative art shortly after its establishment, which were supplemented by further digital donations from the “new” friends who are at home in crypto and AI art. The foundation has also been purchasing its first works since 2023.
