Foundation Herbert W. Franke – connecting art and science
The art meets science – Foundation Herbert W. Franke was established in 2022. It honors the life’s work of the visionary Herbert W. Franke and promotes connections between art and science with publications, events and exhibitions. It also supports scientific projects in the area of Franke’s research work in the field of speleology and neuro-aesthetics. An important task is also the open access cataloging of Franke’s art works in cooperation with the Center for Art and Media | ZKM Karlsruhe, the location of the extensive Herbert W. Franke work archive.
The life’s work of Herbert W. Franke, who holds a doctorate in theoretical physics, is anchored in three fields: generative art, science fiction and cave research. However, these three seemingly very different areas of his life are united by one great common thread – the desire to bring the unknown into the realm of human perception: with works of art that are created from research and technology thanks to state-of-the-art equipment and computers, with possible worlds of tomorrow, which he presents for discussion in numerous novels, radio plays and stories, and with cave exploring with its invisible underground beauty which he brings into the visible. He got pestigious awards in each of these fields.
