5800K – A Flight into the Light

Animation by Robin Rush and Tobias Laufer, Story by H W Franke

The 3D animated short film 5800K from 2009 is based on the expressive short story “Fahrt zum Licht” by Herbert W. Franke, first published 1960 in “Der grüne Komet”. The title of the computer animation, 5800K, refers to the temperature of the sun’s surface. Franke also directly supported the project of the then students Robin Rush and Tobias Laufer. He contributed a number of his computer graphics from the early years of digital art for their diploma thesis in multimedia at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. They can be seen in the spaceship’s scenery as a defining element of the authentic style, whereby the main aim was to create a unique look away from clean and sterile perfectionism that reflects the dark and intense atmosphere of the story.

The Foundation is now publishing this iconic short film from 2009 in its YouTube-Channel.

The plot of the short story “Journey into the Light”: A humanoid extraterrestrial civilization has long suffered from a lack of natural light and warmth. To satisfy their needs, a small expedition group sets off for a planet closer to the sun. Gradually, the desire becomes an obsession. Will their wish for excess win out over the will to live?
