Aquiring a Legacy: 250 works by H. W. Franke donated
On October 16, the exhibition Herbert W. Franke / Gottfried Jäger. Kunst und Konstruktion will open at the Essener Museum Folkwang. The idea for the exhibition arose in the course of an extensive donation of around 250 analog and digital works by Herbert W. Franke to the Museum Folkwang by Susanne Päch, board member of the art meets science – Foundation Herbert W. Franke.
The donation comprises photographs, graphics, videos, and computer animations from various creative phases of the artist. Good half of the works, including a part of the extensive series Math Art from the 1980s, will be on display in the exhibition until January 10.
The donation expands the collection of the Museum Folkwang by important works from Franke’s artistic estate. Thomas Selig, Head of the Photographic Collection at Museum Folkwang: “Herbert W. Franke was a multi-talented universal artist and a founding father of algorithmic media art who expressed himself across a wide variety of media and forms of expression over many decades. Through an extensive donation of his works, comprising around 250 photographic prints, digital graphics, as well as digital video and image files, Museum Folkwang is receiving a significant expansion. We are deeply grateful for this generous donation.” And Susanne Päch notes: “Of course, I am delighted that through this donation, so many works by Herbert W. Franke, which provide a broad overview of his creative output, found a new home in this globally renowned museum for modern and contemporary art.”
